Neue Galerie NÖ in Krems

Conceptual idea

Situated on a very prominent position at the Steiner Landstraße in Krems the building incorporates the diverse axis of the surrounding historic parts of the town.  The structural layout of buildings and yards defines the distinctive shape and the internal circulation. There is no principal facade, there is no main entrance. The new museum completes the block with a sculptural building without prevailing directions. Towards the River Danube and the Steiner Landstraße it can be recognized as a unique landmark not endangering the beauty of the old town.

Pathway – no walkway

The visitiors walk along a designed pathway to the Galerie Niederösterreich. All solitary canopes are seen from the shipping pier and the floor is covered with beige mineral pith – both helps finding the way intuitively. The ground level provides a kind of multifunctional open space - pathways, squares and a minimum of infrastructure – this area should be used as a meeting point or passage leading the visitors through many different entrances into the museum.

Visitors flow

Every museum is connected with a special and unique direction equivalent to the main direction of the particular building facilitating the orientation above all. The main staircase as a vertical element starts just next to the information and shop desk continuing with change of directions and leading from one to another hall in a consecutive and varying way. The visual connection to the foyer helps for orientation.
